Together with partners Viaccess-Orca, Harmonic and Digital Immersion, we showed our low latency tiled VR streaming technology with ambisonic audio and great Blue Man Group content at NAB2017. We used a simulated CDN at first, but later switched over to streaming straight off Akamai’s CDN. Streaming of 8k VR content over a commercial CDN to a consumer device (the Samsung Gear VR) – it worked flawlessly.
This was a true world-first, no one else showed real streaming of 8k VR content. All VR experts that saw the demo were highly impressed.
We presented our joint paper with Harmonic on the principles and benefits of tiled VR streaming during the NAB conference.
You can download the presentation here: Streaming UHD-Quality VR at Realistic Bitrates: Mission Impossible? We created a White Paper that is based on the submission to NAB, which can be downloaded here.
At a very successful NAB Show, we showed 8k VR content streaming off Akamai’s CDN at 14 Mbit/s. Everyone liked the demo, but especially those that are in the business of distributing VR content were highly impressed. “This is awesome” and “I’m blown away with your quality – I need a demo in my lab!” were just two quotes from major content providers.
The Blue Man Group stopped by, turning the Harmonic Booth into a chaos and playing with the demo. See the pictures!
We’re honored and proud to be part of this groundbreaking demo at NAB, which is enabled by our tiled streaming technology:

The newly established Forum collects industry leaders in VR360, including Sky, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Movielabs, TNO, and tiledmedia’s VR streaming partners Harmonic and Viaccess-Orca. The purpose of the Forum is to make VR an attractive, high quality experience for consumers.

Rob has been appointed as the Forum’s Secretary, to serve next to President David Price of Ericsson, and Treasurer Paul Higgs of Huawei. He is also Board Director on behalf of TNO.

Tiledmedia was selected to pitch to the VR Venture Capital Alliance (VRVCA), on December 6th, in San Francisco. Today, we were proud to learn that we are one of the 10 companies that are given this opportunity, out of total of 500 that submitted their application. Fingers crossed!
